Nosocomial Transmission of Extensively Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in a Rural Hospital in South Africa
Gandhi et al, The Journal of Infectious Diseases 2013;207:9–17
This article describes the use of social network analysis to construct transmission networks among extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-tuberculosis) patients clustered genotypically. The authors established epidemiologic links for the majority of patients and were able to demonstrate multiple generations of transmission. They concluded that the XDR-tuberculosis epidemic in Tugela Ferry, South Africa was not the result of a point-source outbreak but, instead, the result of multiple generations of nosocomial transmission.
