Modeling the Spread of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Outbreaks throughout the Hospitals in Orange County, California
Lee et al, Infect Control Hosp Epidemiol. 2011 June ; 32(6): 562–572
This article describes the construction of an agent-based model to represent patient flow through adult acute care hospitals in Orange County, CA in order to model the impact that a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) outbreak in one hospital has on other hospitals. The authors found that every outbreak that was simulated eventually affected all of the other hospitals included in the model. Therefore, strategies designed to prevent and control disease transmission should account for the fact that health care facilities are interconnected.
